Skinny by Donna Cooner

Synopsis:
Find your voice.

Hopeless. Freak. Elephant. Pitiful. These are the words of Skinny, the vicious voice that lives inside fifteen-year-old Ever Davies’s head. Skinny tells Ever all the dark thoughts her classmates have about her. Ever knows she weighs over three hundred pounds, knows she’ll probably never be loved, and Skinny makes sure she never forgets it.

But there is another voice: Ever’s singing voice, which is beautiful but has been silenced by Skinny. Partly in the hopes of trying out for the school musical—and partly to try and save her own life—Ever decides to undergo a risky surgery that may help her lose weight and start over.

With the support of her best friend, Ever begins the uphill battle toward change. But demons, she finds, are not so easy to shake, not even as she sheds pounds. Because Skinny is still around. And Ever will have to confront that voice before she can truly find her own.

My Thoughts:

Skinny was a great novel. The book is about a girl named Ever. She has an over eating problem. Meanwhile, she hears a girl's voice in her head named Skinny. Skinny likes to tell Ever what people really think of her weight. At 302 pounds, Ever decides to get help and go through with the gastric bypass surgery. The rest of the book is about the ups and the downs of post surgery. It’s also about her fight with Skinny for control of her mind. This book is a lot like another book I read, Empty by K.M. Walton. Both books are about high school girls who are overweight. They both get picked on by their peers. Both of the girls can sing really well and love doing it. However, neither girl tells anyone because they don’t have enough self-confidence due to their size. Both get a chance with the guy they have a crush on for a long time, only to find out he is a jerk. I read these books almost back to back, which is how I noticed the similarities. Other than being like Empty, I really liked Skinny. The plot flowed smoothly. It was interesting hearing Skinny’s thoughts and seeing how much they impacted Ever. When Ever was having a good day, one bad thought from Skinny could bring her down. I personally thought Ever could have used some counseling to help her. Although she battles her demons in the end, it would have been great to see her battle them with the help of others. The Broadway musical aspect of the book was cool as well. I’m a big musical fan so I knew most of the songs and plays that she was talking about. I liked most of the characters. My favorite character was Rat. He stuck with Ever throughout her surgery and healing process. Even when she was nasty to him, he was still supportive of her. That’s what true friendship is. I recommend Skinny to anyone who likes books about eating disorders, self-esteem issues, or social issues.

I give Skinny: 5/5.

I traded with another blogger for this book. I was in no way compensated for this review.

  1. I've been overweight my whole life so this book appeals to me. I've been seeing it on several different blogs and I need to get myself a copy. I had not heard of Empty. Which is "better" in your opinion?
    Thanks!

  2. Personally, I think I liked Empty better, but they are both great books.

  3. Sounds like a good read. I've struggled with my weight all my life. Or rather now that I'm older. I look back and I wasn't that bad in HS. hehe
